KABIDAS THROUGH THE YEARS

by Francesca Magtanong

The College of Communication will celebrate its 4th year anniversary this coming July 17, 2018. The college is a 4 year-old institution, a newbie who proves to be progressive from the time it was established. Truly, COC goes through an exhilarating journey and climbs through th ladder of stardom within the entire New Era University.

New Era University started operations in 1975 as a non-sectarian educational institution gifted by the Iglesia Ni Cristo to the society. Four years after, in 1979, the course Mass Communication was integrated to the courses offered by the university. The Department of Mass Communication was then under the College of Arts and Sciences along with other pioneer courses like the Bachelor of Science in Political Science and Bachelor of Science in Psychology. The CEM Building housed Masscom back then.

During its first year, the Masscomm class was only consisted of 12 students and graduates.
In the years that followed, the Mass Communication Department has created competent and well-nurtured graduates who made great contributions to the media and communication industry. Some of the most notable and successful graduates of AB Mass Communication were:

  • ·         Sir Ernie Magtuto - EBC, Music Composer
  • ·         Mr. Ian Simbulan - GMA, News Producer
  • ·         Ms. Fernandez - Aslan Advertising Agency
  • ·         Darlene Jianna Manalo Albert - EBC Producer/Director
  • ·         Jamila Gail TalaƄa -EBC Host
  • ·         Jonathan Pardo -EBC Executive Producer
  • ·         Maru Peter Henry – INCINEMA, Director

More and more students enrolled in the program which strenghtened its foothold in the university. The department was considered as one of the strongest programs in New Era University and thus gained fervent support from the university administration. The program’s population kept on growing as years went by. The teaching force proved to be outstanding. So in July 17, 2014, through the collective effort and initiative of the Board of Trustees members Atty. Dorothy Kristine Manalo and Atty. Theoben Jerdan Orosa and University President Nilo Rosas, the Mass Communication Department was finally removed from the College of Arts and Sciences to stand on its own by creating the College of Communication. Professor Margele San Andres was designated as the Dean of the College of Communication.\

From then on, the College of Communication was designated its own home, now known as the COC Building. It was given the necessary support, equipment and educational materials  useful to further  improve the quality of education the students would obtain from COC. Soon enough, the college had its own studios like the Barn where important events, theater and play productions, exhibits, seminars, film festivals and other activities are held. The teaching force expanded to cater effectively to the increasing student population. For three years since its establishment, the College of Communication has only offered Bachelor of Arts in Communication as the sole program under it. The students called themselves “Kabidas” which is a colloquial term for someone who wants to be always in the limelight. The Communication Guild is the supreme student government of CoC with officers elected every year through election. Comm Awards or Communication Awards is an annual ceremony to commend and give credit to the students who did exceptionally well during the entire school year. The awards included the dean’s listers, the best performances in plays and films produced by the students, best production and film, etc.

In the three young years of the College of Communication, it has achieved a relatively good set of achievements such as the following:

This coming school year, two more programs are being added under the college namely Bachelor of Arts in Journalism and Bachelor of Arts in Broadcasting. The college will now have three courses under its wing. New K-12 program graduates are already flooding the college for admission. The college expects for a bigger population now that new courses are added.

What we see now is just the beginning of a continually progressing College of Communication. The 4 year-old college never fails to prove that its establishment is well-deserved and in season. It is fair to say that there will be more great things to watch out from the College of Communication in the years to come.
